Lisa O'Kane is a throw back to the good old days of country music, when artists used to get noticed by singing other peoples songs and gigging themselves into the ground. On listening to this album, the first thing that strikes the listener is that O'Kane has an absolutely colossal voice backed up by a top band of country musicians(including Albert Lee).
Opener, 'Ain't Done Nuthin' is the best performance on the album. The song is surprisingly one of only three written by O'Kane leaving the listener wondering why she hasn't got more self penned songs on the record.
The rest of the album is hit and miss. O'Kane is undoubtedly a fantastic performer, and when she picks suitable material ('It Don't Hurt', 'Speed of the Sound of Lonliness'), she blows most artists out of the water. However, the song selection on 'It Don't Hurt' is not always great. 'Give Me this Night' is the sort of obvious overblown nonsense that Whitney Houston or Celine Dion would release, while 'Misery and Happiness' strays a little too close to Bon Jovi's 'Blaze of Glory' for comfort at times.
However, when Lisa O'Kane gets it right, she is up there with the best performers out there at the moment. Surely her next step is to work on her song-writing, and release an album of her own compositions.
