LISA O'KANE: "Peace of Mind" (Raisin'Kane)


Though promoted as some kind of California cowgirl (she hails from rural Fish Camp, up near Yosemite), O'Kane sounds more like a sophisticated chanteuse. There's a banjo here, pedal steel there, harmonic phrasings on "Long Gone" that would make Emmylou Harris twitter and some Irish whistles at the end of this second, self-released album. But the overriding listening experience is of O'Kane's sensitive alto precisely illuminating the emotional specifics of literate love ballads. You don't have to be a twanghead to like it.
