Lisa and her guitar playing and songwriting partner Mark Fosson 'breezed' into the club and soon took to the stage to open with the delightful 'Long Gone' from her latest album 'Peace Of Mind' which they had co-written. A song that reflects the pain of real-life experiences of love 'long gone' with the words ÒWhy have you left me broken and blue? Was not my heart faithful and true?Ó Lisa quickly assessed the mostly mature audience who were both attentive and appreciative by choosing much to my delight a set consisting of many ballads. Next up was 'Little Black Cloud' from Lisa's debut 'Am I Too Blue' penned by Mark which was well received. This was followed by their gorgeous version of John Prine's 'All The Way With You', by this point I was wrapped up in the quality of Lisa's vocal performance. Lisa then put her guitar to one side allowing Mark to accompany her on 'Sometimes' whist she danced and twirled across the stage in her pretty flowing dress, the audience enjoying the ballads took to the dance floor too!
Then came a short medley 'Little White Lies' / Softer Place To Fall from the new album. I had not previously heard any of the new material but was thrilled with everything I was hearing. I then shouted out for 'Am I Too Blue' and Lisa very kindly obliged. Her rendition of this Lucinda Williams song confirmed that this lady requires no Pro-tools whilst in the studio. The emotion that Lisa delivered brought a tear to the eye and it went straight to my heart. What a fabulous vocal and wonderful memory to hold onto from her first UK visit.
She then fell back on a Gillian Welch song 'Red Clay Halo' which so suited her voice. After overcoming some gremlins with the sound system it was very pleasing to hear another John Prine song 'Speed Of The Sound Of Loneliness' which Nanci Griffith made her own. Lisa said it is to appear on her next album. The hour ending far too quickly with another new song 'Wrap Me Up'. Lisa then kindly stayed behind to make the club raffle draw and signed magazine photos and copies of her new album. She and Mark then had to rush off to some lucky persons birthday party! -I wish it could have been mine! All the way home though I was singing the songs in my head.
During the show she related various tour stories of mishaps which had taken place up to this point, including a sound system failure resulting in an 'Unplugged' show and breaking a guitar at the Borderline gig. I certainly hope this reconnaissance trip does not put her off returning to the UK next year. Her music I feel would be even more welcomed in Ireland and Scotland in particular, as certain new songs recall her Scottish heritage.
Thank you Lisa for a most enjoyable show - can't wait to see you again.
